My Favorite Kind of Weather: 4 Simple Pleasures

My favorite kind of weather is warm, dry and comfortable, with just enough breeze to make sitting outside a good idea. I want to enjoy the day without spending half of it trying to cool down, stay dry or find another layer.

Give me that kind of afternoon, somewhere worth exploring and a good place for lunch, and I am happy. A rooftop drink later would not hurt either.

I do not have one exact temperature in mind. I know it when I step outside: the air feels good, the sun is out, and there is no immediate reason to go back indoors. Those are the days when I want to take the longer route, find a terrace or leave a little more time between plans.

1. My favorite kind of weather makes being outside easy

A little chill in the morning is fine with me, especially with an espresso on a balcony. By the afternoon, I want enough warmth to sit outside comfortably. Not the kind of heat that makes walking a few blocks feel like work.

Humidity is where a beautiful-looking day can lose me. I like the sun, but I also want to enjoy the time I spend in it. Warm and dry, with a light breeze, is much closer to what I have in mind.

The picture in my head is a comfortable spring day in São Paulo or an early-fall day in the Hamptons. That is the feeling I am describing, rather than a promise about either place’s forecast. The actual weather still gets the final say.

I have had plenty of reminders of that at Formula 1 races. At Interlagos in 2024, I was in uncovered Grandstand G during a very wet weekend. That is a different experience from sitting on a terrace and deciding whether to have another drink. I still wanted to be at the race, but I certainly would have ordered different weather if that had been an option.

My favorite kind of weather lets me spend less time managing the conditions and more time enjoying what I came for.

2. A day that makes me want to take a drive

Cars are part of this for me. There is something about an enjoyable road, the windows down and no need to hurry that makes good weather even better.

I also notice the light. A Ferrari 812 or a classic Porsche 911 looks particularly good when the sun is low enough to bring out the shape of the bodywork. I can appreciate that without needing a destination or an elaborate plan.

A drive toward the coast would fit nicely. So would a Sunday afternoon on a road I already know. My favorite kind of weather gives me another reason to get out and enjoy the drive instead of treating it as the part between two places.

I do not need to turn every free afternoon into a major trip. A good drive and somewhere worthwhile to stop for lunch would do it. The car, the road and the weather all contribute, but the best part is having enough time to enjoy them.

3. A long lunch and a rooftop drink

You probably knew food would find its way into this.

A comfortable terrace can turn lunch into something I want to take my time with. I am there for the food, but sitting outside on a good day adds to the experience. I would rather enjoy another course or stay for coffee than rush off just because the meal is technically finished.

Later, a rooftop and a Negroni would be an easy choice. I want to enjoy the view and the drink without holding down a menu in the wind or deciding how much longer I can tolerate the heat.

Sir Victor’s rooftop became a regular stop during my Barcelona trip in June 2026. After spending time out in the city, I liked coming back and sitting down for a drink. That is the kind of time I want to leave in a trip: a chance to enjoy where I am staying rather than only using the hotel as somewhere to sleep.

That is why my favorite kind of weather matters to the way I travel. Restaurants, bars and hotels are already a big part of my plans. Good weather gives me more ways to enjoy them.

4. Enough comfort to leave the afternoon open

I put plenty of research into a trip, but I also like having time to see what catches my attention. A shop I would otherwise walk past. A street I have not explored. Somewhere to sit and watch the city for a while.

Those decisions are easier when I am comfortable. I am more likely to keep walking or make an extra stop when I am not thinking about an umbrella, a heavy coat or the quickest way back to the hotel.

I cannot order the weather with the rest of the itinerary. I can appreciate it when it cooperates and make room to enjoy it. Sometimes the best use of a free afternoon is simply to stay outside a little longer.

I would not write off a destination because it might rain, either. São Paulo keeps bringing me back, and I know better than to count on uninterrupted sunshine there. I still make the restaurant reservations and go to the race. When a comfortable afternoon comes along, I try to make the most of it.

That is my favorite kind of weather. Nothing especially complicated. Just a day that makes the things I already enjoy a little easier to enjoy.
